World Water Monitoring Day: in action the ASTM’s innovative platform rainwater harvesting system

The motorway system, which is characterized by extended impermeable surfaces, is an extraordinary tool for intercepting water resources that, thanks to specific recovery and regimentation systems, can flow into storage tanks for future use. The collected water can thus re-enter the motorway production cycle and be used by the toll station and service area near to the plant for daily cleaning activities, as well as for specific sector activities, such as the production of saline mixture for winter anti-freeze treatment. Water resources can also be used by neighboring external entities for both agricultural and industrial uses.

The first platform rainwater recovery and reuse plant was built and recently started up by ASTM near the Biandrate-Vicolungo interchange, along the A4 Turin-Milan Motorway managed by the Group.

Specifically, thanks to this intervention, water from rainfall events that will insist on the 28,000 square meters of territory hosting the Biandrate-Vicolungo interchange will be collected, treated and subsequently conveyed to about 90 tanks with a total capacity of more than 6,000 cubic meters, to be then properly reused. This work will be followed by other similar facilities in the Italian motorway network operated by ASTM, thus enabling the Group’s concessionaires to significantly reduce their needs for water from ordinary sources, while bringing benefits to the involved areas.
