The results of ASTM Group R&D activities available to the scientific community: presentation of the volume dedicated to the Mollere Viaduct

Infrastructure safety has always played a central role for ASTM, manager of over 6,000 km of motorway networks worldwide. The theme of research, applied therefore to safety and the improvement of the user’s travel experience, is a constant driver in the Group’s business and investment strategies.

SINA and Autostrada dei Fiori, respectively the engineering design company and motorway concessionaire of the Group, in collaboration with the Turin Polytechnic, conducted an experimental study carried out on beams from the demolition of the Mollere Sud viaduct of the A6 Turin-Savona motorway, which had been in operation for over 55 years. Through a complex laboratory set up in the field and a series of loading and unloading cycles, it was possible to evaluate the resistance capacity of two beams, one built with ordinary reinforced concrete and one with in post-tensioned prestressed concrete, by stressing them until they broke.

The technical-scientific relevance of this study is significant as it has generated a substantial wealth of data, now made available to the scientific community, which adds to the information base useful for a more efficient management of road works and for the drafting, by the legislator, of new regulations to protect the safety of the infrastructures.

The findings were summarized in the book “Safety Assessment of Reinforced Concrete Structures and Infrastructure: the Mollere Viaduct Experience” and presented in Rome on the occasion of the event held June 7 at the prestigious venue of the Center for American Studies, attended by industry professionals and experts.
