The Chiomonte junction, a project serving the new Turin-Lyon railway line, combining respect for the local area with a European vision

The Chiomonte junction was created to connect the Chiomonte construction site, the operational hub for the construction of the Italian side of the Turin-Lyon railway line base tunnel, with the A32 Turin-Bardonecchia motorway, without interfering with local traffic.

The Turin-Lyon line, with its 65 km of high-speed/high-capacity rail link between Italy and France, is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe, linking up with the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) that supports the EU market and the daily travel of millions of citizens. By allowing trains to travel at low altitude, bypassing the Alps, it will significantly promote rail traffic: it is estimated that over 1 million heavy vehicles will be off the Alpine roads, saving 3 million tonnes of CO2 every year.

Through the new Chiomonte junction, work vehicles and transport of excavated material from the railway tunnel benefit from direct access to the motorway, without any impact on local traffic. The structure consists of two ramps that start at a height of over 50 metres and descend towards the construction site: one 572 metres long at the exit of the A32 motorway and the other 448 metres long at the motorway entrance. The junction took two and a half years to complete, employing around 100 professionals per month for a total of 400,000 hours of labour.

The project, in agreement with TELT, the binational public promoter of the Turin-Lyon railway line, was managed by the motorway concessionaire SITAF and carried out by Itinera, both part of the ASTM Group. The work, which was completed in December 2025 and will be dedicated to construction site logistics in the coming years, involves the installation of WIM (Weigh-In-Motion) – dynamic weighing systems – to prevent overloaded vehicles from negatively impacting the life expectancy of the A32 motorway and other infrastructure already in operation. These systems will be implemented by Sinelec, the Group’s technology player. The synergy between SITAF, Itinera and Sinelec is testament to ASTM’s “One Company” business model, which incorporates integrated skills covering the entire value chain of the infrastructure sector.

The junction combines local needs and a European vision, in a positive example of upgrading existing infrastructure to promote safer and more sustainable mobility.
