PIARC Bridges Committee: workshop and technical visit to the A6 viaduct upgrading works
17 March 2026On 12 and 13 March, the international workshop organized by the Politecnico di Torino, the PIARC – World Road Association Bridges Committee and the interdepartmental centre SISCON – Safety for InfraStructures and Constructions took place in the city of Turin.
The event began with an in-class training session focused on dynamic monitoring of infrastructure, followed by technical site visits. As part of the programme, the upgrading worksites along the Autostrada A6 Torino–Savona opened their doors to participants for a visit dedicated to the demolition and reconstruction of several viaducts along the motorway.
Around thirty-five experts from several countries around the world took part in the initiative, including engineers, researchers and infrastructure professionals interested in deepening their knowledge of methodologies and approaches used in the management and renewal of motorway bridges.
The classroom session on 12 March featured Giuseppe Pasqualato, Technical Director of SINA S.p.A. and member of the PIARC Technical Committee 4.2 (Bridges), with the presentation “Bridge monitoring in the management of infrastructure assets within the experience of SINA-ASTM.”
The field experience on 13 March provided participants with an overview of the different phases involved in the management and upgrading of infrastructure, thanks to the contributions of professionals from the companies of the ASTM Group involved in the project: Autostrada dei Fiori A6 as motorway concessionaire, SINA responsible for design and construction supervision, and Itinera as the construction contractor.
The morning session opened with presentations led by SINA, illustrating the A6 bridge upgrading programme, as well as the activities related to inspection, monitoring and assessment of existing structures. Particular attention was given to the definition of intervention priorities, the design of structural upgrades and the role of construction supervision and safety coordination on motorway construction sites.
Completing the programme was the contribution from Itinera, which presented in detail the construction phases of the “Sopranda” viaduct, offering a practical perspective on on-site operations.
This two-day event in Turin represented a concrete example of the “One Company” approach adopted by the ASTM Group: an integrated model that covers the entire infrastructure value chain, from design and asset management to construction and improvement of the works.
Through the collaboration and complementary expertise of the Group’s companies, this approach enables the development of operational and technical synergies capable of ensuring more effective, safer and more innovative solutions for infrastructure management and development.
