Milan metro line M1 extension: contract awarded
30 June 2025The ASTM Group, through its EPC contractor Itinera, was awarded the construction of the extension of the Milan’s Metro Line M1, one of the most significant infrastructure projects planned for the city in the coming years.
The contract, worth approximately €360 million, involves the construction of a 3.3-kilometer long fully underground section and three new stations (Parri-Valsesia, Baggio, and Olmi), enhancing the connection of these districts to the city center. Works are expected to last around six years.
The project has been developed using the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology, ensuring a comprehensive view of its construction, environmental impact, along its full life cycle. The design includes cutting-edge technological solutions, particularly in safety, such as next-generation fire prevention systems. Most of the tunnel will be excavated using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) to minimize surface impact.
MM‘s assignment of the M1 line extension goes to the JV that includes, in addition to Consorzio Eteria with partners Itinera, Vianini Lavori and I.CO.P., also Ghella and the C.M.B. cooperative. With this new contract, the ASTM Group confirms itself as a primary player in infrastructure and mobility in the Milan area, where it is already involved, on the one hand, in the construction of major works such as the Milan Santa Giulia Arena and the future “Drop of Bovisa” University Campus of the Milan Polytechnic, and on the other hand in the management of strategic road arteries such as the A4 Tornino-Milano morway and the A58 Milan Outer Ring Road.
