ASECAP Sustainability Forum: ASTM brings the evolution of tolling with the Free Flow system
16 December 2025What concrete answers can transport infrastructures offer to the sustainability goals set by the European Green Deal within the Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP)? This was the central theme of the 4th edition of the Sustainability Forum, held in Rome on 15 December. The event, promoted by ASECAP – the Association Européenne des Sociétés Concessionnaires d’Autoroutes et d’Ouvrages à Péage, the leading European association for the management of toll motorway infrastructures – brought together key European voices in the sector to shape the future of transport networks with a focus on ecological transition. ASTM provided a concrete answer: delivering safer, more innovative and more sustainable mobility, an evolution driven by the digitalization of services such as tolling.
Pietro Contegno, Chief Information & Digital Transformation Officer of the Group, spoke about how ASTM is leading the transition towards Free Flow tolling, a solution that enables travel without stops or slowdowns at toll barriers thanks to automatic vehicle detection portals. This technology, implemented in both the Italian and Brazilian concessions managed by the Group, is designed to reduce queues at toll gates, thereby lowering emissions and improving safety. A key part of the presentation was S*Gate, the Free Flow technology developed by Sinelec, ASTM Group’s technological arm.
Free Flow is a tangible demonstration of ASTM Group’s commitment to addressing the major sustainability, resilience and innovation challenges being discussed at the European level. Through its deployment, the Group is contributing to the achievement of the goals set out in the CSRD directive.
