Across the Alps: SITAF, the motorway link between Italy and France
26 March 2026SITAF, one of the ASTM Group’s ten italian motorway concessionaires, manages two key assets for transalpine mobility between Italy and France: the A32 Torino-Bardonecchia motorway and the T4 Fréjus Tunnel – the latter operated through the Italian French company GEF, in partnership with SFTRF (Société Française du Tunnel Routier du Fréjus).
Both infrastructures are part of the Mediterranean Corridor of the TEN-T (Trans-European Transport Network), serving as a vital transalpine route for European trade. Beyond their logistical importance, they play a decisive role in tourism by providing access to Alpine ski and nature hubs, generating positive socio-economic impacts on the cross-border regions.
The A32 Torino-Bardonecchia spans 73 km along the Susa Valley, covering an elevation gain of 1,000 meters—from 300 meters in Turin to 1,300 meters at the tunnel entrance. The route required numerous engineering solutions: over 60% consists of structural works, including 19 viaducts and 24 tunnels, some of which exceeding 5 km in length.
The T4 Fréjus Tunnel effectively enables cross-border transit, acting as a connection between the Italian and French motorway networks. With its 13 km span, the T4 is the longest twin-tube road tunnel in Europe. The tunnel has been recently upgraded with extensive safety measures, including an advanced ventilation system, 34 pedestrian shelters, and 9 vehicle bypasses. Operations are managed by a Control Room located at the Italian entrance—a binational center that ensures maximum efficiency in both standard and emergency conditions.
