A58-TEEM, an integrated transportation system for Milan and its metropolitan area
30 September 2026The A58 – TEEM Tangenziale Est Esterna di Milano is a 32-kilometer motorway designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the eastern part of Milan, ensuring fast and safe travel through an area marked by high population density and a significant concentration of industrial hubs. The infrastructure, which entered into operation in 2015 and has been part of the ASTM Group since 2024, sees over 30,000 vehicles pass through it daily.
From a technical standpoint, the roadway features three lanes in each direction plus an emergency lane. Safety and driving comfort are ensured by advanced technological systems, including a network of 155 cameras and 51 radar sensors, supported by an active anti-fog signaling system along the entire route. All systems are managed by a dedicated Operations Control Center, staffed 24/7.
The construction of this roadway was marked by particular attention to environmental and sustainability issues. The adoption of sound-absorbing barriers and embankments limits noise pollution, while a system of retention basins and water treatment plants manages rainwater to protect the aquifer. Energy efficiency is ensured through fully LED lighting which, in addition to reducing consumption, allows for customized visual signaling to further enhance safety levels.
The positive impact on the surrounding area extends beyond the main route thanks to the construction of 38 km of connected road infrastructure and the upgrading of an additional 15 km of secondary roads. Tangenziale Esterna’s commitment to the community is also reflected in the promotion of sustainable mobility and the protection of cultural heritage. In cooperation with local authorities, more than 30 km of cycle-pedestrian paths and nine Special Environmental Projects dedicated to the enhancement of historic areas have been completed.
