A5 Quincinetto-Aosta motorway: a strategic hub in a mountain region for mobility towards the Alps
16 January 2026The ASTM Group manages 1,100 km of motorway network in Italy, with a particularly significant presence in the north-west of the country. The A5 Quincinetto–Aosta motorway, operated by SAV Società Autostrade Valdostane, represents a road axis of fundamental importance, serving as a true cross-border gateway to France and Switzerland and ensuring tourist and commercial access to renowned Alpine destinations and the main international tunnels.
The route extends for 67 km through a morphologically complex area, characterized by extreme rises, narrow valleys and rapid changes in altitude. Along the way, 10 tunnels and 130 bridges are essential to overcome the topography and ensure connectivity. For road users, there are eight interchanges connecting to the local road network, four service areas and eleven parking areas, including one exclusively dedicated to electric vehicle charging.
The characteristics of the mountain environment, subject to hard winter conditions, significantly affect SAV’s motorway operations. Every year, from 15 October to 15 May, the company sets up a meticulous operational organization to ensure safety and full motorway usability, through the prevention of ice and frost and the prompt removal of snow.
The Nus Maintenance Centre is the logistical and operational heart of this complex activity. It holds the equipment for the storage and distribution of de-icing products, the vehicles dedicated to snow clearance and the Operations Control Centre which receives weather bulletins and data several times a day to guide interventions.
To treat approximately 1,500,000 square metres of pavement, SAV deploys a fleet that includes thirteen spreaders for solid and liquid de-icing products, sixty-one snow plough blades for clearing the carriageways, seven-wheel loaders (essential vehicles for handling and rapidly removing large accumulations of snow), and one snow blower.
SAV’s primary objective is to ensure maximum safety and continuity of service. This goal is successfully pursued not only through specialized preparedness for the most challenging weather conditions, but also through technological equipment and skilled personnel dedicated to motorway operations throughout the year.
